Spain vs Italy

La Roja face Italy in a friendly on the 5th of March at the Vicente Calderón as they prepare to defend their title as World Champions later this year. The 22-man-squad is Vicente Del Bosque’s last opportunity to assess his players before the final call up for Brazil 2014. The match could prove to be Diego Costa’s debut for the national team since declaring his allegiance to Spain. Del Bosque will be eager to assess how the Atletico Madrid striker fits into his setup. Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo’s good form at Manchester City earns him the other spot up front, meaning the likes of Fernando Torres miss out. Koke earns another call up alongside familiar faces in midfield, while Thiago Alcantara returns on the back of some superb football under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. Del Bosque has called on Cesar Azpilicueta as he looks to solve the problematic right back role, leaving no room for Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal or Alvaro Arbeloa. Gerard Piqué misses out through injury. The 22-man-squad is as follows: Casillas, Víctor Valdés, Reina, Juanfran, Javi Martínez, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Azpilicueta, Raúl Albiol, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Koke, Thiago Alcántara, Iniesta, Jesús Navas, Cazorla, Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, Negredo, Pedro, David Silva.
